Shannon Kesl, Ph.D.

Chief Scientific Officer & Co-Founder
Scientist | Master Logistician | Relentless Advocate for Pets & People

Because “good enough” never was.

The catalyst of Neoterric is Dr. Shannon Kesl, a classically trained research scientist whose life’s work sits at the intersection of rigorous science, non-toxic therapies, and an unconditional love for animals. For Shannon, science has always been personal. And the path that led her from the lab bench to the creation of Neoterric is marked by one unwavering belief: Our Pets Deserve Better.

Her journey began in traditional academic research, where she earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology from the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida. She spent years decoding the intricate relationships between metabolism, inflammation, wound healing, and cancer.

That path led her to KetoPet Sanctuary, where she stepped into a role that changed everything. There, Shannon translated cutting-edge metabolic science into real-world hope for dogs battling cancer. It was in this work that she realized she could finally combine her passion for science with her love for dogs. Witnessing firsthand how nutrition, cellular health, and non-toxic therapies could change—and save—lives, she knew she had found her calling.

“I knew I could use what I’d learned in the lab to help dogs,” she recalls. “And once I saw the impact, I couldn’t look back.”

During this time, Shannon also met Dr. Loren Nations, who was integrating metabolic therapies into his own veterinary practice—earning her nickname for him: “KetoPet East.” Their collaborations showed her that true change in veterinary care was possible. Shannon has been at the forefront of developing ketogenic and metabolically therapeutic diets for dogs, translating science into protocols that have improved lives across the globe.

Her path next took her into human-focused biotechnology, designing cancer diagnostics and researching additional therapeutics. Even then, she partnered with Dr. Nations whenever possible on canine research, reminding colleagues that she was “here for the dogs.” The deeper she went, the clearer it became: the system was focused on symptoms, not solutions, overlooking therapies that could enhance standard care and heal without harm.

A chance reunion with Dr. Nations years later sparked something more: a shared vision for a new standard of care. What began as scientific collaboration became a calling, to build a company that could honor the love between people and their pets with real science, real integrity, and care without compromise.

By 2024, that vision became Neoterric. A company built not for shelves, but for the dogs still at our feet.

As Chief Scientific Officer, Shannon brings a rare blend of:

  1. Scientific rigor grounded in peer-reviewed research.
  2. Translational expertise that bridges human biotech and veterinary health; bringing discoveries from the lab bench into real-world clinical adoption with impact.
  3. Operational mastery sharpened through years of running a biotech company, marked by master-level logistics, legendary color-coding, and a systems mindset that drives precision, efficiency, and progress.
  4. A conviction that non-toxic, nature-based therapies can complement and enhance standard of care, offering solutions that improve outcomes while reducing harm.

For Shannon, this is more than science.
It’s about the bond between animals and their people.

It’s about standing beside those navigating the hardest journeys.

It’s about building a future where pets, people, and the planet are cared for without compromise.

Her guiding truth is simple:
“The facts don’t lie. The data doesn’t lie. Science doesn’t lie. And when we bring it forward with integrity, we can’t be ignored.”

This is science that honors the bond between animals and people.

With you, for them.

This is Neoterric.

our Why

Bailey: Love of My Life

Bailey was the love of my life. The dog who defined my soul. Her cancer journey showed me that pet parents do have choices, and her legacy drives my mission to turn grief into hope and action.

Bailey taught me that love and science together can turn despair into hope. She is the reason behind everything I do.

Buster: From Stray to Soul Dog

Buster came from a hard life and a cancer battle, but became the snuggliest old man who taught me about resilience and second chances. He proved that the dogs you least expect can change you the most.

Buster showed me the power of second chances from transforming from a fighter into the snuggliest soul I’ve ever known..

Igor: The Little Dog with the Biggest Heart

Igor arrived on our doorstep in rough shape, but his goofy spirit and boundless love healed my broken heart after Bailey. His sudden loss was devastating, but his joy and love will always light my path.

Igor healed my heart with joy and goofiness, reminding me that love often arrives when you least expect it.

Bailey: Love of My Life

Bailey was the love of my life. She was the kind of dog that defines not just your 20s, but your very soul. For nearly a decade, it was just she and I against the world. She was the dog who taught my husband what true love, bond, and connection with a dog feels like. When she was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, known as the “silent killer” in dogs, my world stopped. However, I was lucky that my work with KetoPet Sanctuary and Dr. Loren Nations gave me a different path: one where there was something I could do, not just something to fear. I was able to put her on metabolic therapies, and though we lost her three months later to something other than cancer, she left this world cancer-free.

Through my work with KetoPet, I was already seeing that a cancer diagnosis didn’t have to mean only devastation and despair. There are things pet parents can do, choices we can make to help, to fight, and to give our animals a better chance. Bailey’s diagnosis made it personal. She allowed me to connect with the pet parents I spoke with every day in a way I could never fully explain. She is my “why.” Her story is the reason I fight to create a future where no pet parent feels helpless, and where love is matched with knowledge, hope, and action.

BUSTER

Buster was one of the KetoPet dogs, a stray who had to be tranquilized just to be caught. He didn’t like men, picked fights with other dogs, and carried the kind of rough edges life had carved into him. When his cancer returned and his foster couldn’t provide the care he needed, I brought him home. I set up half my garage as his recovery space, expecting him to stay separate from my other dogs, but he had other plans. Buster quickly became part of the family, discovering love, safety, and the joy of companionship.

With treatment, we got him into remission again, and this time the cancer never came back. He lived to nearly 17 before we lost him to vestibular disease in 2021. The dog who once seemed untouchable became the smoochiest, most snuggly old man, teaching me that even the hardest beginnings can end in love, resilience, and redemption. He showed me that behind every rough exterior is a heart waiting to be understood, and that sometimes, the dogs you never expect end up changing you the most.

IGOR (IGGY)

Igor (Iggy for short) came into our lives in the most unexpected way. About a year after losing Bailey, I told my husband I wasn’t ready to look for another dog, but if one ever needed help, I thought my heart had healed enough. Two weeks later, an English bulldog showed up in our driveway, skinny, sick, and covered in sores. He was just 11 months old, the runt of the litter, and was barely half the size of what a bulldog should be. Despite his rough start, he walked straight into our lives.

Iggy was goofy, full of personality, and healed a little bit of the hole Bailey left behind. Losing him was sudden and devastating as he collapsed from a heart attack during a grooming appointment, and just like that, he was gone. But Iggy’s joy, love, and spirit will always be with me. He was a once-in-a-lifetime soul, the goofy little runt who healed my heart, filled my home with joy, and left a love that will never fade.
